Fantastic day!

Definitely recommend Tristan and this tour. We started out doing one tour and because of construction on the original excursion Tristan recommended another or to refund us, we weren’t sure and then after a few questions back and forth we went for it and we are glad we did. The alternate 200 foot waterfall and the hike up to it was amazing, we stopped at a local market for some fresh delicious fruit for the trail, Tristan was attentive to all of us and answered any questions we had. Talked extensively about local food and culture. And recommend other excursions. On the way back we went to another local place for empanadas and Margaritas. We won’t hesitate to book with Tristan again thanks for a great day Sara and Simon 🙂

Absolutely worth it!

One of the must do trips if you are visiting El Yunque. Tristan was wonderful and helpful through the hike. Pick up smooth, drive was wonderful, he made sure to help everyone throughout the hike.

The waterfall is absolutely mind blowing!! Make sure to add it to the itinerary on your next visit.

Once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Absolutely unforgettable experience! The Chasing Waterfalls tour with Tristan was the highlight of our entire trip. From the moment we started, Tristan’s passion for nature and his deep knowledge of the area made the journey incredibly engaging and fun. He’s not only an expert guide but also super personable and made everyone feel welcomed and safe the entire time.

The trail itself was a perfect balance of adventure and beauty—lush greenery, hidden streams, and smaller waterfalls along the way that just kept building the excitement. But nothing—and I mean nothing—could prepare us for the breathtaking 200-foot waterfall at the end. It felt like stepping into a dream. The roar of the water, the mist in the air, and the sheer scale of it all was absolutely magical. Pictures just don’t do it justice.

If you’re even thinking about booking this tour—do it. You’ll come away with memories (and photos) that will stay with you for a lifetime. Huge thanks to Tristan for making it so special!

What You’ll Experience

1️⃣ Morning Café and Mountain Magic

Your day starts the Puerto Rican way, with café con leche, something warm from a bakery, and that easy morning chatter that makes you feel like you already belong here. Your guide will introduce the group, share a little island humor, and then we head toward the mountains.

The drive is beautiful. San Juan fades behind you, the air gets cooler, and the views start giving you that “wow” feeling. Windows open, música playing lightly, everyone settling into the rhythm of el campo. It’s your first hint that today is going to hit different.

2️⃣ Safety, Gear, and a Quick Vamos Pa’l Monte Moment

Before the hiking begins, we gather for a simple safety chat and pass out equipment. Nothing fancy, just what you need to feel comfortable. Your guide explains the plan, the river conditions, and the parts of the trail where you might get a little wet. Or a lot.

Someone always asks if they can wear Crocs. The answer is no. You’ll thank us later.

This moment sets the tone. Calm, prepared, and ready pa’l agua.

3️⃣ The Trail That Wakes Up Your Senses

The hike starts gentle. Birds calling. Leaves brushing together like they’re whispering chisme. The ground soft from the morning dew. Your guide points out the plants your abuela probably used for everything from teas to tummy aches, and tells a quick story about the history of the area.

As we follow the river upstream, the terrain begins to change. You’ll step over roots, cross shallow water, pause at clear pools, and feel the air thicken with that rainforest warmth. The kind that hugs you from the inside out.

Every few minutes, someone says “Wait, look at this” and stops for a photo. No shame. We get it.

4️⃣ The Slow Build Toward the Falls

The sound of the waterfall starts as a small rumble. Then it grows. The trail becomes more adventurous, with rock scrambling and puddles from last night’s rain. You start to feel like the landscape is guiding you in.

This part is fun. You move a little, you breathe a little deeper, and you begin to understand why people fall in love with Puerto Rico’s mountains. They’re alive in a way photos can’t explain.

Your guide keeps an eye on everyone and shares little tips. Step here, hold there, look up at that view. It feels like hiking with a friend who just knows stuff.

5️⃣ The 180 Foot Waterfall Reveal

And then it happens. The river bends, the trees clear, and the waterfall comes into view. A 180 foot drop of pure mountain water, mist floating around like a halo. It’s big enough to make you pause without thinking.

We get comfortable here. Some swim. Some take photos. Some sit quietly and let the moment sink in. Your guide slices fresh fruit and passes it around. Mango, pineapple, maybe papaya. It tastes better when you earn it.

This stop is a whole vibe. A little adventure, a little peace, and a feeling that you’re standing in a story older than all of us.

6️⃣ The Walk Back, Full Heart Edition

Once you’ve soaked in every detail, we start heading back. The hike down feels lighter. More talking, more laughter, more of that “we did this” energy.

Shoes muddy, hair messy, spirit happy. The good kind of tired.

By the time we reach the vehicles, everyone looks at each other with that unspoken agreement:
“This was worth it.”

Safety Comes First

We take your well-being seriously. Every tour begins with a safety meeting, proper equipment distribution, and pace adjustments as needed.

Our guides know the terrain intimately — it’s where they grew up exploring.

Why Tranki Tours?

Because we do it a lo tranki: calm, intentional, and full of heart.

We don’t run tours just to check a box.
We take you to the places we grew up exploring — the hidden slides, the secret swimming holes, the quiet corners where you can hear the rainforest breathing.

Puerto Rico isn’t something to rush through.
It’s something to feel in your chest, in your laughter, in that moment when the water takes your breath in the best way.

Our guides are locals who:

  • Know the safest path because they’ve hiked it a hundred times
  • Tell the stories behind the land, not just the directions
  • Celebrate your first cliff jump like family

Adventure should be fun, not frantic.
Guided, not crowded.
Personal, not pushed.

Take a breath, slow down, and let the island welcome you —
sin prisa, con corazón.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be very athletic to join this tour?

Not at all, but you should feel comfortable moving your body. This route includes light rock scrambling, walking on wet terrain, and steady uphill hiking. If you’re regularly active, you’ll be great. If you prefer easier terrain, we can recommend a gentler Tranki tour.

Is transportation included?

Transportation is available as an optional add-on. If you choose it, we’ll pick you up and drop you off at your hotel or Airbnb. Otherwise, you’ll meet us at a local bakery to start the day.

How long is the hike?

The full tour lasts about 6 hours, with roughly 2 miles of hiking. The trail is well-marked and becomes gradually more challenging as we move upriver toward the waterfall.

Can I swim at the waterfall?

Yes! Swimming is allowed and encouraged. We’ll have time to relax, swim, and take photos at natural pools and at the 180-foot waterfall.

What should I wear?

Wear secure shoes you can hike in and that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy. No slides, flip-flops, or loose sandals. Choose lightweight clothing that can get wet, and if you’d like to swim, wear a swimsuit under your hiking clothes.

What should I bring?

Bring a towel, a change of dry clothes (required if you’re riding in our vehicles), and anything you may need for comfort. Leave unnecessary items locked safely in the vehicle.

Is this tour safe?

Yes. Safety is our priority. We start with a briefing, supply the necessary equipment, and move at a steady pace. Not only did our guides grow up exploring this terrain and know the safest paths, river conditions, and how to support guests of all experience levels, but we are also licensed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company and wilderness first-aid certified.

Can people with medical conditions participate?

For your safety, guests with severe breathing conditions, epilepsy, or heart issues cannot join this excursion. Please let your guide know about any injuries, recent surgeries, or mobility limitations so we can support you or help you choose a more suitable tour.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain is part of rainforest life and doesn’t stop the adventure. If conditions become unsafe due to heavy rainfall or river levels, we may adjust timing or reschedule.

What’s your cancellation policy?

We have a firm 48-hour cancellation policy due to high demand and the prep involved in each tour. This ensures we can honor our guides, vehicles, schedule, and the guests on our waitlist.
